Ok, so I’m not really into the whole ballroom dancing/latino/salsa thing… But in a moment of drunken silliness I made a bet with Colin Moss and his brother Michael – Durban’s King of Salsa – and lost… So tomorrow night I get to put on my dancing shoes, head off to the aptly named Reform Club in Durban, and participate in my first ever Salsa dance lesson!
In case you’re not sure what I’m on about, “Salsa” became popular as a nickname to refer to a variety of different music, from several countries of Hispanic influence: Rhumba, Són Montuno, Guaracha, Mambo, Cha cha cha, Danzón, Són, Guguanco, Cubop, Guajira, Charanga, Cumbia, Plena, Bomba, Festejo, Merengue, among others. Many of these have maintained their individuality and many were mixed creating “Salsa“.
Yep, not my style at all!!! I’d be happier going for skydiving lessons or learning how to skate a vert ramp… But I guess neither of those offer the opportunity of meeting hot girls (of which Mike assures me there are “copious amounts”) and every girl I know is super amped that I’m going. So maybe there’s an up side?
Either way, the first person to call me Patrick Swayze is going to taste a freshly made knuckle sandwich.
